Melaleuca

Melaleuca is a genus of nearly 300 species of plants in the myrtle family, Myrtaceae is commonly known as paperbarks, honey-myrtles or tea-trees. They range in size from small shrubs that rarely grow to more than 16 m (52 ft) high, to trees that ranges up to 35 m (115 ft). Their flowers generally occur in groups, forming a “head” or “spike” resembling a brush used for cleaning bottles, containing up to 80 individual flowers.

Description

  • Melaleuca is a large tree that grows up to 20 metres tall.
  • Has a thick and papery bark.
  • The colour of the bark is usually white but also pink and cream in colour.
  • This plant has weeping branches.
  • The leaves are wide, flat, narrow, egg-shaped or lance-shaped.
  • Flowers are usually cream, white or greenish-white in colour.
  • The aromatic leaves yield Tea Tree Oil which has antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties.
  • Requires a lot of sunlight and keep it on the dry side over winter.
  • Heavy watering requires during the growing season.
  • Needs pruning when needed.
