Botanically called Gazania rigens, treasure flowers is a more common name. The plant is often referred to as the African daisy and should not to be confused with Osteospermum African daisies. The plant often trails along the ground. In hardy areas, landscapers use this plant combined with other low growers as an ornamental ground cover to edge lawns. This plant can reach 6 to 18 inches (15-46 cm.) in height and about the same in the spread as it trails on the ground. A clumping mound of grass-like foliage produces Gazania treasure flowers. This easy-to-grow bloom is resistant to dry or sandy soil. Heat and salty spray do not discourage its growth or beautiful blossoms either, making it a perfect addition for oceanfront.
